Over the years golf club technology has radically changed. Club heads are now much more user-friendly than ever before, allowing the ball to be hit consistently further and straighter. Playing with this modern-day equipment is vital and it must suit your individual swing (when was the last time you saw to swings the same). Unfortunately, golf club manufacturers have no industry standards do even the clubs available from the shelf are different. So the only way to be sure that you maximise your playing potential is to use clubs that offer the playing characteristics your swing desires.

Club Head Design

All golf clubs vary in appearance and playing characteristics. Every little curve & bump is in that particular place for a calculated reason. The head design that best suits a player depends on skill level, ball-striking ability and desired playing features. Players new to the game or players improving tend to suffer from various swing faults. These faults will affect how accurately they return the club to the ball during the swing. This in turn affects the accuracy and distance of their shots. Using club design these miss struck shots can now be accounted for.

The Cavity Back

When looking to improve your ball-striking consistency you will need to look at club with a cavity back. This type of head re-distributes weight around the club’s perimeter. Usually, the clubs have a wider sole which positions the majority of weight further away from the clubface, offering a lower centre of gravity. With a larger sweet spot and more club head stability through impact, the cavity back is the most forgiving iron on off-centre strikes. The size of the cavity can vary from club to club, so even if you are an established player don’t rule out this type of club head.

The Blade

The other iron head available is the traditional blade. This has no cavity, resulting in a club head that has the weight is more evenly distributed. The bottom of the club and top line are thinner, which appeals to the eye (mostly that of a low-handicap player). As the weight is more evenly distributed and thinner the centre of gravity is closer to the face. This in turn creates a lower launch angle, lower trajectory. As most bladed irons are made from forged steel, you will have more control and feel over the shot you select to play. You will be able to shape the ball in flight more effectively, however, shots struck from the heel or toe will lack distance and accuracy.

Selecting the correct club head design is essential. Once you have found the design that best compliments your game, it will be time to custom-fit the other components. This will ensure that your new clubs maximise your potential.

Shafts

Using the correct shaft in your new club is vital and is one of the most important parts. This part of the club enables the ball to travel further with more control. Combining the correct shaft with the correct loft we can create the optimum launch angle and ball spin rate.

Launch Angle

This is the angle created by the clubface to the ground when the ball leaves the clubface. It is measured during the first half of the ball’s flight. When maximising distance this must be perfect.

Spin Rate

This is the amount of backspin and sidespin imparted on the ball at impact. It affects trajectory, which in turn affects distance and accuracy. It can be visually seen during the second half of the ball’s flight.

A low trajectory occurs, when there is not enough backspin on the ball. This causes the ball to fall quickly, loosing distance. When the ball flies too high, it has too much backspin, reducing distance, as the ball starts too low, then quickly climbs upwards and drops.

The ideal type of shaft (steel or graphite) and flex for a player varies according to their swing speed, ball flight and swing characteristics.

Kick Point

This is the point at which the shaft bends during the forward swing. A slow club head speed generally benefits from a lower kick point. This slower head speed will create less spin on the ball so the player will need help to the ball get into the air. The lower kick point will help produce a higher launch angle & trajectory. All this will result in longer carry and greater distance.

Torque

The correct level of torque helps to square the clubface and also ensures the clubface stays stable during impact. It denotes to the amount of rotation that occurs in a shaft. A value under 3 indicates low torque, so the shaft twists less, offering a harder feel.

Shaft length

The correct length helps players consistently deliver central strikes, and central strike produce maximum ball speed and control. Longer shafts help to create more club head speed, but you compromise consistency and control. A player’s address position, swing mechanics, ball striking, shot pattern, posture during their downswing, height, and wrist-to-floor measurement must be considered when deciding shaft length.

Lie Angle

When fitting irons the lie angle is very important. This can only be calculated once the correct shaft length has been determined (length affects lie angle). This measurement is the angle created between the sole of the club and the centre line of the shaft, A club that is too upright will start the ball to the left of the target. Too flat a lie will result in the ball starting its flight to the right. Ensuring your clubs have the correct lie angle, gives you a very good chance of hitting the ball straight!

Grip Size

Grip size is important as the only part of your body that actually touches the club during the swing is your hands. Having the correct grip size can even reduce the effects of some swing faults.

Gap Testing

Making full use of the technology available to us, we can also offer Gap Testing to assess and make sure you have an even staggering of yardage from club to club, and importantly this can be done with your wedges also. This will come at a cost of £15 for this service.
