On just his second DP World Tour start, Ryggs Johnston left the Aussies in the dust, and was lifting the trophy on the Sunday of the ISPS Handa Australian Open.

The BMW Australian PGA Championship
Taking place annually at the decorated Royal Queensland Golf Club in Brisbane, the BMW Australian PGA Championship is one of the busiest events of the year down under. Just weeks after his first professional win, this year’s winner claimed his first DP World Tour title.
Elvis Smylie played consistently well to beat the competition and be the one lifting the trophy on the Sunday. The tournament was cut a day short to 54-holes as the course suffered torrential rain to call off Friday’s round. Despite the poor weather, Smylie opened with a stellar 65 and carded two rounds of 67 to finish on 14-under-par.
The 22-year-old Gold Coast native turned professional when he was just 19 back in February 2021, and has been playing excellently recently having claimed his first professional victory at the WA Open this October. Just over a month later he was victorious against a field of tour veterans.
Seasoned Australian golfers were on his tail throughout the tournament, including Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith. Both players couldn’t catch Smylie on the final day however, and they finished in second and third place with Smylie 2-strokes clear of Smith.
Elvis Smylie admitted he felt his short game made up for being wayward off the tee, and the thrill of winning against his idols was an experience he’ll never forget:
“I looked up to these guys since I was a kid and just being in their presence and to compete against them for the title, I’ve learnt so much and am just so grateful and so honoured right now. My short game was great, I definitely saved myself in that department. I was pretty average off the tee, but golf is a game of imperfection, and today was a sign of that.”
The win saw Smylie jump dramatically in the Official World Golf Rankings by nearly 500 positions, from 736 down to 253. With such a promising start to his career and being able to hold his own on the world stage, who’s to say Elvis Smylie won’t be lifting a major trophy one day?
